The dome gives headroom above the rim, which is what a cup needs once the scoop sits proud of it or a topping goes on. A flat lid at that point either refuses to seat or seats by pressing the serving down into the cup, and the customer sees the result when they open it.

Clear plastic keeps the dessert visible, so a lidded cup still sells itself in a display case and still looks like what was ordered when it comes out of a delivery bag. A case of 1000 is a bulk restock quantity rather than a small pack, and lids empty at the same rate as the cups they fit.
